Our Journey

HANDS: A Legacy of Empowering Communities (Since 1979)

Humble Beginnings, Growing Impact:

The HANDS story begins in 1979. A team of young doctors, led by Professor A.G. Billoo from a public sector hospital in Karachi, set up rural clinics in Sindh province, Pakistan. Their dedication to providing basic healthcare to underserved communities in Memon Goth, Malir (Sindh), in 1980 attracted the attention of UNICEF, leading to a formal collaboration. This marked the birth of HANDS (Health And Nutrition Development Society), which gained registered status in 1993.

From Local Roots to Global Reach:

Over 45 years, HANDS has blossomed into a leading non-profit organization. We champion an integrated development model, encompassing healthcare, education, and disaster management expertise. Today, HANDS boasts a network of 6,300 grassroots partners, collaborating to deliver sustainable development projects worldwide.

Building Trust and Upholding Standards:

HANDS is a registered, tax-exempt, and Pakistan Centre of Philanthropy-certified organization. We hold accreditations from the European Union and meet the management standards outlined by USAID's Institutional Management Program (IMCP). Additionally, HANDS is a member of the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Expanding Our Reach:

In January 2014, HANDS International opened its doors in London, UK. Recognized as a charity with HMRC and registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with the Charities Commission of England and Wales, HANDS International is committed to upholding the highest standards.  We further expanded our reach by establishing an office in Nepal as an NGO in 2015.

A Multifaceted Approach:

Since 1979, HANDS has focused on key areas like health, education, poverty alleviation, and disaster management. We go beyond by incorporating cross-cutting programs encompassing social mobilization, gender development, human resource development, communication, research, resource mobilization, and social marketing.

Empowering for a Brighter Future:

HANDS operates in the social sector, empowering communities to tackle modern challenges. Our mission is clear: to empower individuals and communities through education, healthcare, and sustainable development initiatives. We work hand-in-hand with local partners to create lasting solutions and break the cycle of poverty.
